He's No Fool

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool
than to speak out and remove all doubt

--Abraham Lincoln

Let it never be said that Clarence Thomas hasn't studied the luminaries.

Justice Thomas has reentered the scene recently after the release of his bitter autobiography. The above entry on his taciturn presence was noted in the 6/8/07 edition of The Week magazine.

According to this tally, Thomas has spoken an average of 70 words per year while serving on the bench (+/- whatever's been added since June.) Not a bad gig.

I wonder how many of those words were repeats.

Those who think the first President Bush is such a nice guy, such a decent fellow, should remind themselves that we have him to thank for our current president as well as for this flawed and hateful man.

Exactly right. The stacking of the Supreme Court is, if possible, an even worse legacy to be left with than having had GWB as president.

As Justice Stevens, a reasoned voice, said in a recent interview, he has never considered himself liberal; it is just that things have become so skewed that he is now the voice of reason. He was (is) a moderate republican, before the insane fundamentalists took over. Of course, we have the machiavellian Karl Rove to thank for that power-grabbing shift.

I sure Stevens would like to retire but there's no way he would allow them to have one more seat. Nixon thought he was doing a good thing naming him but as a jurist from both side of the aisle he has been the voice of reason there since Marshall left.

I agree. Let's hope he doesn't give the chance to seat another Alito or Roberts.
