RANGER AGAINST WAR: Little Nemo in Slumberland <

Little Nemo in Slumberland

___________

George W. Bush is Little Nemo, and like Flip's hat says -- "Wake up."

To all the ooorah patriots who would accuse a dissenting voice of not being patriotic, scan some recent articles in your own fraternal organizations' magazines. There is an unusual groundswell of protest afoot.

In the November/December
Purple Heart Magazine, a sturdy protest from Dr. Thomas Dimitry against inadequate funding for the medical needs of returning troops. Following is an excerpt:

"For the men and women who have sacrificed so much, more must be given. A nation that has accepted one's service must not neglect those disabled in that service. Every veteran receiving VA compensation at the 100% rating (total and permanent) should receive at least $5,000 per month in compensation, with yearly increases equal to the inflation rate plus one or two percentage points. Perhaps a more equitable payment would be one-half of the salary paid to members of Congress. After all, they are the ones that vote for war and conflict and Veterans benefits.

"Dreams are shattered, lives broken, fear and anxiety rule. Veterans, spouses, children, parents and families pay a horrendous price for the pain and suffering from disease and physical and mental trauma that does not go away and increases with age."

"The issue is not money, because money is available to continue a conflict and to maintain and build weapons systems.
The cost of one B-1 Lancer bomber is over $280 million or about the cost of some war games that would pay for 20 years of benefits for the 100% disabled veterans. Billions of dollars are found for foreign aid, and a fraction of the money would provide for a lifetime of benefits."

". . .Freedom is not free. The cost of war is long-term and must never be incurred if those few, those very few, that sacrifice so much for so many are not cared for physically, mentally and financially.

"Freedom would then be but words in the wind."

We are not the only ones. If you feel like critical review is heresy, don't look to your formerly blindly patriotic rags for confirmation. Protest is in the wind there, too.

Why, are you implying that there is dissent in the ranks? Shocking...

Speaking of dissent, this pleased me to no end. I'd been wondering where the younger generation has been on these issues. Very powerful. Enjoy!

I cannot speak for all of the younger generation (or for that matter am I entirely certain which younger generation is being referred to here), but I despise these thieving bastards.

tw,

Yeah, it's good to know that people are thinking. What worries me is the older generation now in leadership positions. And they are clueless.

People are liable to be surprised just how far up in the ranks the dissent goes, and how deep the disaffection is.

I hope we dont have to find out the hard way. I really do. One way to not have to find out the hard way would be to honor the promises we made to these guys and gals. Unfortunately neither the Commander in Chimp nor the spineless CONgress seem very interested in doing that.

My, my.....it is as if suddenly the country might be expected to pay the REAL and total cost of war?? I have often thought if there was a way to make the ordinary oh-so-patriotic sheeple of America recognize the true costs, war and warmongers would be much less popular.

"ordinary oh-so-patriotic sheeple of America"

You hit the nail on the head there labrys. Americans are a consumer sociey and as long as they're comfortable they don't give a shit what their government's doing.

We've already mentioned the "search and avoid" procedures that are going on with our troops in Iraq. I'd say that's a bit of dissention.

Also there's been 4,698 desertions so far this year as opposed to 3301 in 2006.

Once again, the press, which is more concerned with ratings than reporting the truth has catered to a comfortable consumer public. Not a public word about the dessention in the troops.

TW...

Don't get me started on the level of despair, abuse, and exhaustion fueling the rates of troops running to whatever refuge they can find. It is only Monday, if I rant at that level today, I won't have any juice left by Wednesday!

tw,

NPR has covered this story of desertion; understandable, it doesn't play well in Peoria.

jolly roger,

The national leadership does take initiatives on veteran's compensation matters. The only problem is, it's generally negative on the veteran's side.

Also, most national initiatives are behind the power curve, reactive vs. proactive in nature. The president's recent blue panel committee on veteran's issues had such a narrow charter that nothing of comprehensive value emerged from their recommendations.

A few weeks ago the Canadian Supreme Court ruled against an American deserters request for immigrant status. Suprisingly, the reason given for the decision was that in the Iraq war it is a volunteer army as opposed to the drafted army in the Viet Nam war. In other words, you chose your poison, stay with it.

Steven Harper, the PM of Canada has been called Bush's new lap dog now that Tony Blair is out of the picture. Harper has managed to take Canada, the founding country for Peace Keepers, and have them fighting in Afghanistan along with the US. BTW, I think Canada and the Netherlands are the only Nato countries in Afghanistan that allow their troops to act in a combat role. Harper leads an minority conservative government and there will probably be an election within the next yr.

Yesterday, at the enviromental conference in Bali, Bangladesh called Canada minions of the US.

Interesting things happening up north.
