We the People

Tell me sweet little lies

There's deceivers an' believers an' old in-betweeners,
That seem to have no place to go

In yesterday's State of the (dis)Union address, George W. Bush emphasized numerous times the concept that the American people should be trusted. This hogwash doesn't square with the way Mr. President has treated corpus Americanus. In today's America it is not We the People, it is them, and us.
If the government trusts us so much, then why so many Federal laws to keep us in line? In fact, why not make the Federal income Tax voluntary if we are so trusted? It seems that trust is only useful as an applause line. If it is "We the People," let us plug in a few rejoinders of our own:
- We the People are tired of these phony wars. End them now.
- We the People are tired of warrantless intrusions into our private lives.
- We the People are tired of a politics of divisiveness.
- We the People are tired of national policy that claims to be fiscally conservative, yet squanders money prodigiously.
- We the People are tired of secret courts, secret police, secret prisons, secret interrogation techniques and secret White House visitor logs.
- We the People are tired of weekly escalating grocery bills and medical costs.
- We the People are tired of daily increases in the cost of petroleum products.
- We the People want a government free of liturgical entanglements.
No, this is not currently a government of, by and for the People. That is a lie. The only thing the "We the People" get is socked by taxes and the chance to vote to sustain a deceit called "democracy." That is the State of the Union, 2008-style.
We the People are pissed.

"We the People are pissed."
Fat lot of good that'll do us. Short of bloody revolution, we're screwed.
mr. oblivious,
Exactly. "Pissed" is pretty mild. Pissed is opening another cold one and watching the next episode of "Lost".
Short of action, being p.o.'d achieves nothing. The power elite expects "pissed," hence the crumbs to the paeans, like the $300 or $600 rebate check in the mail.
I am not sure where the revolutionary fervor is. Glutted by too many easy and cheap entertainments. . .?
i'm also pretty sure that revoluntionary fervor is blunted by the knowledge that there exists a separation of armaments between the government and military and regular folks that hasn't been this pronounced since the middle ages. as long as they have helicopters, jets, and tanks any resistance would be either very furtive (systems disruptions stuff like that) or suicidal.
tends to dissuade all but the desperate.
MB, Aren't Rangers and Seals desperate men? Isn't that the job description.?
That whole "trust doctors and their patients" bit especially chapped my ass. The unspoken part being "unless they are women wanting to end a pregnancy." And Ranger's last comment, spot on! I never have understood how the government can so use and abuse a military and turn them out to starving pastures without getting their asses handed to them in a more immediate way. I may open a cold one and re-watch "The Rock" and mentally re-write the ending.
MB, I never advocate violence as a solution.
Now for a reality check. In the world of terrorism as seen with the Red Brigade, RAF, ETA,Action Direct et al there was never any danger that they would inspire their respective fellow country men to rise up in arms against their respective govts.Actually they can be seen as safety valves to bleed of the truly violent malcontents. Also they were great theater.
Americans are fat , dumb and happy and not in that order. jim
labrys, Soldier types , regardless of service, are generally masochistic, and as such just continue to suffer whatever the scenario. It's what we do. If the WW1 vets did not physically bear arms v. the federal govt. ,then it'll not likely happen anytime soon. jim
MB,
Following ranger's comment:
You are correct about the disparity in force. However, there are other methods of protest, shy of armed, open street rebellion, as you mention.
We do not seem motivated to make even the slightest subversive gesture. Even voting seems too much of an effort for most.
