Operation Paperback

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend.
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read

--Groucho Marx

The mere brute pleasure of reading --
the sort of pleasure a cow must have in grazing
--Lord Chesterfield

books can be such a welcome respite from the pressures of a combat zone.

i've been working with these guys for a while now.

especially stuff like charlene harris' "southern vampire" series, and stephen pressfield historical novels (many of which take place in the iraq/afghan area).
i remember well the value of an escape book. something to take me somewhere else, even for a little while. and privacy. reading is a solitary effort. going inside the head, alone for a fucking change can be a welcome break from the incessant comradery.

MB,
We used to get books thru the SP packets. Also Red Cross sometimes had them. USO also did this function but I'm not clear if they still do this hence our little plug for OP.

Ranger: Books

It was all I could do to avoid getting reeky pall malls, or worse, by the time the HQ section got through rat-fucking the SP packets.

Excellent. I have a lot of what I consider "escape books", just mindless thrillers and mysteries and sci-fi that I read once, and basically just toss aside. I will have to sign up with these guys, I have boxes full of books that need good homes ;).
