We have been discussing the small tragedy of the Zimmerman - Martin story not because it is unusual but as the phenomenon it is: a too-common story usually ignored, but once the media hops on (for whatever self-serving reason), one for which liberal people feel compelled to pull out their inner Capt. Renault --shocked, you know? All very predictable.

We will have a few more things to say about the disingenuity surrounding the tale (=The Spectacle), but today, a look at the neighborhood watch: Good Neighbor Policy, or stateside Counterinsurgency (COIN)?

For those inclined to exploit the event, The Trayvon - Zimmerman story is one of vigilantism, and becomes an excuse to label an otherwise reasonable self-protective action (=neighborhood watch) as racism. This is an involution of the posture vis-a-vis crime which we have been encouraged to take as a nation since becoming the victims of terrorist acts, namely, one of reasonable caution and vigilance. Florida highways have state-sponsored billboards which urge citizens to be alert, and not afraid. It is a foolish entropy to encourage a naive approach to one's safety.

Vigilantism has been a part of our society since its inception, and actions like tarring and feathering loyalists served many functions, primarily identification and ostracism of The Other. Neighborhood watches are not vigilantism, for The Other is already identified qua his Otherness.

The function of the watch is to identify possible criminal behavior before the action takes place, the purpose not to punish, but to identify. When one enters such a community, one can expect to be asked about one's purpose within the gates; the residents therein have usually paid a premium to feel their safety will be enforced. When an outsider enters the perimeter, he can expect to be identified as such; this is not racism or vigilantism, though it is vigilance.

Profiling has become taboo as it has become conflated with racism, but profiling is the basis of solving most crimes. In Zimmerman's case, the community had suffered numerous robberies and criminal situations in the preceding months. Surely he was aware of the descriptions of the perpetrators in these cases, and it would be sensible to identify figures which match those descriptions and confirm their intent.

And Zimmerman is not alone. Our own President racially profiles every time he sends a Predator or Hellfire downrange in the sandy regions of the world. Mr. Obama acts as the Neighborhood watch captain of the World with every missile strike. Yet when Obama approved the strike which killed another 16-year-old United States citizen, Abdulrahmen al-Awlaki, no liberals cried crocodile tears.

In fact, no one did, despite the sad fact that our President made two kills on that day -- one of the young man, and one a direct shot through the heart of our Constitution.  The young man's grandfather recently wrote a plaintive letter published in the NYT 17 July 2013 asking "Why?",  but there will be no answer ... State secrets, you know?

As a nation, we are an easily-distractable crew. We are suffering an en masse plague of ADHD, and we get our daily feed of pap through the umbilicus that leads to the online and on screen "news" outlets.

Here is the reality on neighborhood watches: Community-based policing has always been the center of our police functions; as citizens we can and must participate in ensuring our own safety. When neighborhood members shut their doors and roll into automatically-controlled garages and don't know their neighbors, you have a community ripe for crime.

Since the events of 9-11-01, U.S. police forces have been degraded as the military and contractors have bled off personnel who now work for Counterinsurgency (COIN) and Foreign Internal Defense (FID)-sponsored programs. At the same time public safety funds have shriveled on the home front, and community-based policing has been drastically reduced.

The Phony War on Terror (PWOT ©) has come home to roost.

If we as citizens do not have the right to ensure own safety in our own neighborhoods, then we have crossed into a police state mentality. When the death of Trayvon Martin is criminalized by a witch hunt trial, what is the message? When the police are not on the scene, the safety of the streets devolves to the citizens.

One may argue til the cows come home why young black men constitute the pages of most police blotters -- hint: economics -- but nonetheless, there you have it. It is a sad fact, but if you live in a vandalized community and see a black youth appear to be scoping out residences, you have reason to suspect. The comic Chris Rock has a skit, "You can't have shit when you around niggas, you can't have shit." referring to the high burglary rates in black communities. We laugh in recognition and then walk out of the theater.

Why pretend it is not a problem?

nice post. captures my own sentiments precisely.

what if the witness who was mere feet away had stepped in to help instead of running inside to call 911? That participation would have saved T's life.

No1,
The history of civilization began with walls, gates and protection of the population. This was our transition from hunter /gatherers to organized society of specialized social skills and participation.
Think Rottenburg in FRG. Think Sparta etc..
Read Jungs works on the archetypes of the walled cities and their connection to the human mind , and it's movement to civility.
We in America had town criers before we had police, and they assured the people that all was well within the wire.Z was and is a trhow back to that age, as is all neighborhood watch types.
The wars in IRQ and AFGH was largely a behind the wire venture.

I was discussing profiling with Lisa this morn, and pointed out that the FBI employs specialists called-what else?
Yep they're called profilers.

What we don't need is weak knee liberalism, progressive thought or right wing craziness. What we need is a responsible press revealing facts rather than emotion, and we need to understand what we need to do to survive, both biologically and as a society. It would help if our leaders would be more man like and less emotional.
We need to recalibrate our lensatic compasses to true north.

Jim, I sympathize with progressives because they want to, well, progress past the archetype of the walled city. That is a happy vision, but it is just a vision. I like to dream too, but I have learned that practicality always wins out. I guess it's a fine line where one holds onto to faith in the vision, yet acts according to the real life situation that presents. This makes progress slow, very slow, but I think it's the only way.

Agreed. The press is fucking mess and it's being so enables politicians/leaders to employ the worst attributes. I don't know how we fix that. There's the internet for alt. info/intel., but then people just to go places on the web that reinforce whatever preconceived notions they had.

One reason I like RAW is that it seems to maintain the balance between vision and reality very well and its perspectives follow the obscured truth and take no prisoners in the process. RAW is rare in this regard. Lead the way Ranger.

Seriously... Trayvon hadn't committed a crime. Zimmerman profiled him. There's just no getting around the facts that there is No Evidence that TM even intended to commit a crime that evening. He had no burglary tools, no gloves, no drugs on him.

There was no justice done in regards to this incident...

But Obama and the racial entrepreneurs want to have a national discussion about Trayvon.

Sorry Grung_e_Gene, but I am less than moved.

Do you care as much about the guy I quoted as you do about T?

Ranger. If the American Establishment Liberals insist on falling in line with their capitalist president know that American Communists have not disappointed.

That still doesn't mean that they can't condemn a murder of a black teenager; especially since he was nary an outsider but a minor son of a man residing in said community whose only crime is returning from a convenience store.

My thought is this, I have already linked Roderick Scotts case ad infinitum. I'm sure we all know by now he killed a teenager committing felony breaking and entering when he "feared for his life", Zimmerman shot down a teen walking on a public street for presumably the same reason.

Why was Scott charged immediately and Zimmerman only charged after nationwide protests? To avoid being accused of presenting a "card" I'll only half-way suggest that it may have been a matter of pigment.

And what of it? Wasn't it true that none of Trayvons DNA was found on Zimmermans person? Could of it been true that his injuries were self-inflicted?? Could of it been that he was partaking of a certain substance but was let off scott-free without a breathalyzer (no pun intended) because he just killed another one of those black kids?

Except for the former, we'll never know now won't we? Is it surprising that these protests inadvertently finally caused the Sanford City Manager to fire the police chief-still presiding after a series of abuses?

I think a rap sheet that includes beating the crap out of cops in drunken rages is a little more than a vigilante. It baffles me that a man who abuses alcohol in this manner was allowed a conceal permit at all, let alone allowed to be a self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman.

I believe such "watchmen" are more dangerous than the threat they appear to be countering. Up here in Upstate New York I prefer my unarmed neighborhood watches. Although bulgaries have fluctuated lately violent crime here has been dropping following a nationwide trend; so why the need for armed suburban militias?

With the "Stand Your Ground" law causing more deaths disproportionatelyto the crime rate and Trayvon Martins emerging everywhere I could see why that could be part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

If revolution isn't your cup of tea why not then start with arresting the bankers that caused such desperate economic conditions in the first place?

The fish always rots from the head down. Journalist Matt Taibbi has their crimes all racked up. With a little regulation, and some capitalist vultures facing justice the petty crimes will follow.

Nikolay, I know all about it re; the video.

At least during the 1960s the left cared enough to take to the streets over it.

Now they are more upset over some blossoming little gangster than they are of the troops.

Compare all the press T got to the, what, two minutes at most during the same time period dedicated to the war?. The wounded and killed troops got 0.

The blacks want whatever they can get by way of hand outs. This isn't about justice for T or justice for anyone. A few white lefty suckers support them because they want something to protest and rebel about and, to their minds, the troops are too dirty - having volunteered to go work for the imperialists and kill people and all. That kind of thing is too upsetting to the lefty mindset.

".....whose only crime is returning from a convenience store"

You impress me as an intelligent man. How can you keep repeating this factually untrue meme? T attacked Z. That is what the evidence showed and that is what the jury found.

BTW.....this is not NCIS, CIS or some other TV crime show. In the real world DNA doesn't stick to everything like it does in Hollywood. But hey, Z's DNA wasn't on the pistol either (court testimony). Maybe he wasn't even the shooter? Maybe Al Sharpton killed T and set up Z because the racial instigation biz was slow and he needed a new Tawana.

Nikolay, the Scotts case is much different in some important ways. I think you are making an apples to oranges comparison. One important difference is the prosecution contended that Scotts shot the victim in the back. Had Z shot T in the back I am certain Z would have been immediately prosecuted.

Additionally, the Scotts case happened in NY - a very anti gun/anti self defense state. Location alone explains the difference in prosecution approaches.

Finally, Do you live around where the Scotts incident took place? Do you ever go to the Dinosaur or to Finger Lakes race track? If so, if you want to get together one of these days first round is on me.

Back to the point about the media deliberately spreading lies, buttressing them with forged quotes and doctored tapes and photos, and people refusing to abandon those lies in the face of proof...

One of the things that did come out in the Zimmerman trial, is that he *was* put in handcuffs, taken to the station, interrogated, and charged that night, and that all the evidence was properly collected by the book. But the story to the contrary persists.

The police chief was not the old one who presided over the previous abuses, but the new one brought in to clean up. He was fired when he wouldn't go along with the lies being told to cover for Angela Corey, as was the whistleblower on her staff.

And yet all of these and the other lies (Zimmerman beat up cops and his Supreme Court justice father got him off, etc.) persist as surely as the 'Fatty Arbuckle killed a girl with a coke bottle' meme.

What is the desperate need in society's soul to stuff itself on fake reality, be that TV, fast food, or StormFront generated internet agit-prop?

Chris Rock also includes a very telling observation in his riff about those who 'just loooove to 'not know'.

no one says, "The press is [a]fucking mess", to which I would add: the people are, too. If people would stop lying to themselves and others, there would be some remote hope for some progress. However, since people = liars, that would be a hard row to hoe.

Yes, Cholo -- amen, brother:

"What is the desperate need in society's soul to stuff itself on fake reality, be that TV, fast food, or StormFront generated internet agit-prop?"

What, indeed. We can see it in most replies here, even, and this is an otherwise rigorous group of thinkers.

LOL. I had never looked at Storm Front before. My curiosity was piqued by Cholo's comment. Great stuff from a comedic standpoint.

I have to admit though, it does riff off the thinking of a lot of white folks I know.

Hopefully it's just people blowing off steam and not taking it too seriously.

I wish StormFront were just a couple of stereotypical would be Jerry Springer guests ranting from a cabin in Montna, but it isn't.

It is a well thought out project from David Duke and Don Black et al. to either poison the well of public discourse, or advance the agit-prop memes of Racism 2.0, and it resonates with an increasingly large audience.

Yes, that is true from what I see. Unfortunate too. Not to make excuses for the stormfronters, but the extremists on the other side - and I include Obama/Holder in that camp - are helping drive the wedge.

I don't see how this ends well; increasingly polarized camps in a society with diminishing economic opportunity.

no 1,

Yes, all extremists harbor hatred and fan the fires of disunity. The very premise of affiliating with any group -- no matter how wronged they are perceived to be, no matter how right you feel you are to do so -- cleaves you from your brothers. That is the sadness of religion, for instance -- a construction which might serve to raise us up (and which many times, does), but which also has this fatal flaw. Bad code, if you will.

Buddist monk Pema Chodron wrote,

“We are all capable of becoming fundamentalists because we get addicted to other people's wrongness.”

Cholo, I'd check Zimmerman's criminal record for yourself. If I might say... In comparison, George Zimmerman's predisposition to violence is no comparison. We know at least Trayvon Martins weed smoking (albeit non-violent) record was honest. Theres no way a black male-of any age- can get away with attacking a police officer by taking a "alcohol education program". It really makes me wonder how many other times Z got off.

Although I would be interested in some links for some of your more spurious claims. I don't think the position of Police Chief is akin to musical chairs.

No one, the Dinosaur BBQ? Sure thing. But let me tell you, having no car makes things a little difficult.

If you don't mind some midday drinking, that'll work out just fine. Any later and I'll be at a lonely bus stop at night and be threatened with a knife again.

You let me know what days and times work for you. I identify one of your options that works for me. We agree to meet at the Dino on that date/time and we have a drink and talk/debate politics, war, culture watch the skirts, whatever.

Looking forward to it.

Cholo and NL,
Was TM not staying with his father b/c he was suspended from school for defacing school property.?
This was not his 1st suspension.
Did he not have property that was linked to burglaries in his possession?
Did his web page not show him handling a firearm? Did he not brag about his aggressiveness and violent tendencies?
Did his no limits niggah page not show what appeared to be him toking up?
This event is soo unsavory and we'll never know the truth. And of course nothing that he did or didn't do should put a death sentence on him,BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED and why he is dead.
And we'll never know.
That's my point.By the same point we do not have the right to tar and feather Z.
Our society is so cavalier with death and violence, but yet in episodes like this WE PRETEND that 1 mo' death has some kind of meaning.

Why are you asking me those questions? I've said nothing to indicate support for lynching Zimmerman, or excusing Martin... in fact, quite the opposite.

What we know is that unless one or the other of them performed some superhuman feat, the narrative that the jury agreed on is the most likely.
