Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone
Ranger Question of the Day:
If the little details are ignored at the VA Outpatient facilities,
what about the bigger things?
Is this really the best we can do for our veterans?

One voice does make a difference. It might be a small difference, but that is as good as any.
Ranger re-visited his local VA Outpatient Clinic Friday for some appointments, and noticed the televisions were no longer tuned to FOX news. Instead, all were tuned to CNN news. (On a previous visit, he had complained to the staff about this.)
No one could remember who was responsible for initially tuning the stations to FOX, nor could they remember a time it not been always on CNN. While it was reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode, it was nonetheless good to see them showing what passes as unbiased news today. At least CNN is a damn sight less warped than FOX.
More fascinating clinic news:
- My doctor didn't have tongue depressors for the throat exam. Instead, she used wooden Q-tips as substitutes. Ranger replied he would have brought chopsticks from his Chinese lunch, had he known.
- She also reported that hand soap was in short supply, and that she had none in her exam room.
Is this what "Support the Troops" means?
Labels: v.a. clinic changes from FOX to CNN, v.a. clinic short on supplies

it is what it has always meant to republicans. after the photo ops they lose all interest. until the next opportunity that comes along for them to feel all macho and shit about ordering us into the fray again.
i miss the good old days, back when civilian authorities did not return salutes with their pretend mockeries (if a subordinate ever rendered one of those little hand flippy things that bush is so fond of to me he'd be doing pushup until i got tired of watching him). it goes even further though. when i was out at the little air base here for the blue angels fly in (we're their winter practice quarters) i saw a local dignitary return a salute.
such basic misunderstanding of the relationship of the military to civilian authority disturbs me.
but, back to the VA, having bankrupted the nation with their PWOT (great phrase by the way), they are now cutting costs where they feel it will not be seen.
nobody likes to look in at the VA. to many sad stories there. too much human wreckage from foolish policy.
the "Tuned to Fox News" phenomenon in government (especially DoD) facilities is and interesting phenomenon.
i've also found that phenomenon in certain Hotel chains in certain areas of the Country.
"movement conservativism" which found its voice in modern Republicanism is no small part propaganda.
Fox and its fellow travelers are the medium, and the "true believers" listen to nothing else and feed on that very very slanted spin......
regarding the VA..... it is part of the Republican mythology that they are the ones "tough" on Defense and the great benefactors of the troops.
it does not take much close examination to realize that the troops are what they screw the most in peacetime and in war, preferring corporate boondoggles contracts and pissing money away on useless, unproven technologies than providing the basic kit, equipment and care for the troops themselves.
they are demonstrably a massive lie when it comes to Defense, and they are also demonstrably incompetent at strategy and the prosecution of war.
Hi Jim,
TV, but no soap? Perhaps the manager of your particular clinic is incompetent. And can't a doctor afford to bring his own soap in?
I love your title on this post. I'm surprised you didn't suggest that Greyhound provide free transportation to Bush to an international airport, under condition that he leave the country.
Dave
MB,
I'm right there with you on the salut thing.:)When the Cin C renders a salute that would even embarrass the AIR FORCE then it's time for some remedial training. The only salute i'd render is with a single finger.
The PWOT idea came from the sitzen war of 1940.
I'm anxiosly awaiting 17 Dec so I can see Jeopardy AND Gran Torino. That'llo be a two star day for me. jim
Ghost,
I am physically unable to listen to that crap. Rush L. AND Bush actually evoke a throwup impulse in my tired old body. This is not a joke or hyperbole- I physically cannot listen.
The people that are tough on defense never seem to be the ones that have shit between combat boots. jim
UC/Dave,
Why not use tongue depressers more than once to make up the shortage.?
It's a sad day when a DR> at the VA would have to bring her own soap-whats next?Bring a generator for her own electricity?
My Dr. is so good but i fear shes reacing tracer burnout. I've cautioned her re. this effect.BTW- she's a veteran of the British system. She came here to escape England and it's system and she ended up at the VA. Now that's irony. jim
I'm lucky in that Portland has a huge starship VA, and the echelons above reality work hard to make it look good for the Distinguished Visitors that troop through all the time. But an I surprised that the VA in general looks shabby after all these years of being ridden hard and put away wet by the GOP? Nope.
"In times of danger or in War
God and the Solder we Adore;
Danger past and all things Righted
God is forgotten and the Solder Slighted"
Nothing much has changed since the English Civil War when that doggerel was scribbled (probably on the latrine wall in a barracks somewhere...)
