Lolita in Tehran
Update: Due to shakeups in the respective Ranger households,
posting schedule at Ranger Against War will change as follows:
Three morning posts a week (Monday-Wednesday-Friday)
+ a weekend edition on Saturday.
If the spirit moves, there will also be the occasional Sunday homily.
Like Ms. Stewart says, it's a good thing.

Watching the rioting in Tehran following disputed Presidential election results, Ranger is struck by one question: Why were there no riots or major street demonstrations in the U.S. following our own disputed 2000 presidential election, when the recount was shuttered by a Supreme Court per curiam decision (Bush v. Gore)?
In both cases the elections were stolen, yet only the Iranians react with a posture of outrage, befitting a culture not yet fascist.
Which country needs to define democracy?

Lemmee see if I can articulate our unspoken, but seemingly well positioned thinking on this...
Um...
yeah...here we go...
"The spreading of democracy is good in countries, but not so good here. Here, we prefer the sheeple to remain docile, and compliant. It is good for us to have other countries destablize because then we can sell [fill-in-product-here] that will benefit us. However, if our own sheeple get uppity, then others can come in and sell their [fill-in-whatever-item-here] so therefore our one and only weapon to keep our sheeple in their place is [fill-in-irrational-fear-here]."
I guess in truth we're only fooling ourselves.
I think the simple answer would be that Americans aren't as oppressed as the Iranians and most of 'em don't know and couldn't care less who's in office.
Bush was bad enough that it might have changed a little, but good ol' American couldn'tcareless-ness'll soon be back.
Maybe some/most/all of the rioting in Iran was stage-managed?
POLT,
Protests almost always have an aspect of "stage management" (organization). I'm sure there were great protests, but there was also a lot of re-texting, so it is hard to gauge the bedrock intensity of the ire.
POLT,
Let's assume you are correct- then the question becomes who and why were they stage managed. Who/how/what benefit accrued to any of the players?
