Terrorism has the goal of creating terror. 9-11 was not a successful act because it created outrage, which is a different outcome. The resultant outrage caused it to be ultimately an unsuccessful operation. Terrorists walk a fine line, in this regard.
One characteristic of liberal governments is that terrorism usually prompts a reasoned response; such is the nature of democracy. Aberrantly, the resulting outrage created a Phony War on Terror (PWOT ©).
Outrage was the emotion, and the resulting PWOT © is an outrage against democracy.

I couldn't agree more!! And it has to end or we're in trouble as a democracy.
What I just can't wrap my head around is why Obama is listening to the warhawks and paying no head to those who know what they're talking about. People like Jim, Ray McGovern, Derrick Crowe, Robert Greenwald, and the list goes on and on and on, but the President seems to somehow remain blissfully unaware of the voices of reason and will instead send more young men and women to their deaths for absolutely no good reason.

The only answer possible to your question, and all of us asking this question is that politics trumps logic and reason. Every time.!
We as a nation cannot prosper under such conditions. Demoocracy is about the perfectibility of man which is not a political construct but rather a philosophical construct.
Politicians are a blight which the voters endorse. Therefore I have little hope that we will prosper in the near or far arenas. To me it's clear that BHO has entered the twilight zone that is clearly called the Presidential Bubble. This includes both fiscal and military policies.
When guys like John Kerry sing the praises of AFGH poofs then we are singing off a sheet of music that ignores reality.

i've told folks that it wasn't the protesters and idiots in the streets that stopped the vietnam war. it was that the military was breaking.
troops in the field were rendering themselves ineffective, post and base strikes, race riots on aircraft carriers...
it's been 8 fucking years. what has been accomplished but unfocused carnage? what do they expect to accomplish except for fucking unfocused carnage?

I'd almost say the Supreme Court decision to give the Presidency to Bush was the bigger win for bin Laden.
