It's late, and I'm a bit punchy. But my reaction to this story is rather telling about the whole shebang (for me, anyway). First, the clip:
- Info from Osama raid shows interest in US trains (AP)
AP - Some of the first information gleaned from Osama bin Laden's compound indicates al-Qaida considered attacking U.S. trains on the upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. But counterterrorism officials say they believe the planning never got beyond the initial phase and have no recent intelligence pointing to an active plot for such an attack.
My first reaction upon reading the head was,
"By Gawd, the poor man had a Lionel train set up in his mancave -- Lionel!!! -- and we killed him, when he really -- secretly -- loved us and our toys!"
That simple reaction tells a few things: [1] What a hopeless, pathetic romantic I am; [2] How severely I distrust the news given me by most major news outlets and, [3] What a failure the entire hunt for OBL has been that his assassination leaves me with the least bit of sympathy for my sworn enemy.
Then I read the story and thought, "This is probably hogwash to quell any suspicion that Bin Laden had in reality been largely superannuated." The whole cascade of events, from the blatant reality that our actual enemy is Pakistan and we daren't do a thing (unless we pull a Qaddafi on Zardari) to the anticlimactic assassination of OBL and Obama's fallow statement that "justice has been done" and wreath laying in NYC today -- it all strikes me as so robotic and forced, and not authentic.
When will the U.S. leave the sandbox and tend to our own gardens, which are becoming monstrously overgrown with weeds?

Sadly not any time soon.
How could such an obvious Captain America moment need spinning? And yet it does.
Very telling that our government has built its own reputation in such a manner as to create suspicion of every move.
The whole spectacle has been a sad one, indeed. The thing that strikes me the hardest is the rank hypocrisy on display in the good ol' USofA. An example is the "Pakistan had to know, he was right under their nose" meme that applies the same logic that could be used about the original 911 crew, who trained and traveled fairly openly in the US the year preceding the attacks. Try to say our government failed to protect us from a bunch of rather amateurish goons who got lucky and you will find yourself in a heated argument. One thing is for sure, bin Laden won. THe other thing I believe is he knew he was a marked man when he approved the attacks, it was just a matter of time. We can only hope and pray the drumbeat for "bring the boys home" will get louder now.
mystify me...
blackenator writes, "We can only hope and pray the drumbeat for "bring the boys home" will get louder now" There is no such drumbeat unless (A) There"s a draft, (Vietnam), OR (B),it's a repub. pres. With good looking dem. presidents, sans draft, (clinton/obama),it's all goot.(btw, same with civ. liberties).
Please don't tell me this is another "loony". He appears to have the credentials. Yet another insider who has had it up to -here- with the never ending river of bullshit. Of course many will still fight furiously against having their media/ govt inspired and guided "belief" system being shattered to pieces: http://www.deepjournal.com/p/7/a/en/2923.html
Gee, no mention anywhere on WHY OSBL hated us.
tw,
I think it's something to do with Beyonce and "American Idol" ...
Planes, trains and automobiles, Lisa.
Is the world in general a better place with this fellow gone? Does the U.S. have some serious issues with truthfulness, etc., about this, and other elements of the "war on terror."
Yes. And yes. No matter. From my perspective, this is just one less terrorist to worry about. It's not as if UBL was a potential Nobel Prize winner or someone who might have made a significant breakthrough in finding a cure for cancer. No, he was a rich guy who abused women and children and believed in killing people who didn't share his religious fantasies, no matter how blameless they might have been in other aspects of their lives.
And you're concerned about the way he died? I save my concern for the way thousands of people have died due to this man's twisted beliefs.
No tears here, Lisa.
JIm...
Good on you bro..good on you.
Again..
All who wander are not lost
and all us romantics aren't hopeless..
Other side is...
Therein the Work...
There it is,
Deryle
Lisa...
Oh boy..
Just read your comment..
You go Grrl..
Good on you, too.
Deryle
Hi Lisa,
Also, rumor has it that OBL was restoring a '55 Chevy in his garage. :-)
Dave
Avedis,
When an entire war is based on bullshit then why sweat it if a MOH Citation is full of errors and flights of fancy.
At mu MOPH meetings i had to listen to hogwash that was quoted from SURVIVOR.
All of my MOH analysis point out serious questions concerning the award, and this is imo why we prefer dead recipients.
jim
UC,
I just came up with the theory that we used a patrol dog b/c we were planning to steal his goats to sell. This could help finance the federal deficit.
jim
Deryle,
This was Lisa's essay.
I have a few ubl observations in the cue.
Prob post tomorrow.
jim
Publius,
I shed not a fucking tear fot ubl, nor does Lisa, but we both mourn the death of a great country.
My tears are not cheap, nor do i have the ability to cheer any mans death.
ISTM that UBL was sorry dude, as OBE as GWB, and unlike Bush he was actually living in squalor like conditions. We're calling his place a 1 mil$ house, and all the pictures show a shit hole.
It's a worse fate to let the sorry bastard live.
jim
Hi Jim,
In addition to the goats, we can also seize his "million dollar mansion" to help finance the deficit. The little TV on the rickety dresser might bring a couple of bucks too.
The Bin Laden story is so mired in bullshit that I have to laugh at anyone who takes it seriously.
Dave
Nice article, thanks for the information.
Dave,
We MUST believe our eyes.
As a building trades professional you are qualified to point out that UBL's hideout was a shit hole and a far shot from a mil$ mansion.
Everything is bullshit in the pwot.
I wonder how long it takes the wives to get onto Oprah.?
jim
Deryle,
Thank you.
Publius says,
"And you're concerned about the way he died?" --
No, Publius, I said nothing of the sort (though I am).
I'm concerned that I thought OBL had a Lionel train set in his mancave when I read that headline. That tells me how little I trust my presidency, the press, the military. That my mind will conceive of any eventuality because I cannot trust our mainstream news outlets.
My flight of fancy is what most interested me.
Hi Jim,
After reading it described as a "million-dollar mansion in an affluent residential neighborhood", I 'bout spewed my beer when I saw the photo. "Shit hole" is a far better description.
I'm so disappointed that OBL wasn't found in a cave in the mountains. Call me a romantic, but I'm a huge fan of all things "underground."
I love your idea of putting the wives on Oprah. :-)
Publius,
"he was a rich guy who abused women and children and believed in killing people who didn't share his religious fantasies"
You left out the part where he kicked his dog too. Honestly, congratulations home boy! You're a true believer--everything we've come to expect from years of government/media propaganda.
