The Right Path

"An Italian court sentenced Rafei Osman Sayed Ahmed, who bragged of engineering Madrid bombings, to 10 years. He faces a 2007 trial in Spain," according to the Wall Street Journal, 11/07/06.

Contrast this to the American pace. It is now four years after KSM has been apprehended and the U.S. authorities are still unable to present a transparent legal action to hold procedings in this matter. After treatment like this, Islamists can rightly say to recruits, "this is what we are fighting."

The Italians, Canadians, Spanish and Germans have not jeopardized their legal and moral integrity with such stalling and "sky is falling" tactics. Contrary to administration claims, trials can be accomplished without further endangering national security.

If the authorities can invoke the concept of national security to curtail trails and to run secret prisons, then America has already lost this war on terror. We have integrated the terror into our own erstwhile democratic institutions, and the attacks no longer need come from without.

The terrorists will have won, but only with our complicity.

To put it bluntly: Thats fascism for ya... The willful stupidity and cruelty in the treatment of US war-prisoners will be one of the things to ponder for historians studying the house of Bush.

Martin,
I hate to agree with you so readily, but I do. Moreover, I feel that in defeating communism, we've become fascistic ourselves.
