Be Alert

A theft was recently reported in our fair capital city which might raise an eyebrow or two.

In ''Chlorine Taken from Pool Supply Company,'' 1,600 gallons of Sodium hypochlorite was stolen from unprotected outdoor tanks; two to five gallons is used to purify a residential pool. Assistant manager John Danner said ''(T)he cops told us it was pretty much untraceable.''

The pool supply company is wondering who would abscond with 1,600 gallons of chlorine. And why would anyone take flight lessons but fore go instructions in landing the aircraft?

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has issued bumper stickers which our local police feature on their patrol cars, proclaiming ''Be alert, not afraid.''
This new development since late January of this year provides one possible destination for the chlorine.

Addendum: Alert reader Lurch from MainandCentral brought the rising costs of chlorine
due to growing energy costs, shrinking supply and high tariffs to our attention, so of course, run of the mill simple theft is of course another possibility here. Be Alert, Not Afraid, eh wot?
