Wolves at the Door?

Every heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag
--Grand Old Flag, George M. Cohan

Here is a recent letter to the editor published in the Wall Street Journal by M.A. Mohammadi, Press Counselor for the Mission of Iran to The U.N. Food for thought.

Iran a Danger? Surely Not

In response to your April 27 editorial ''Missile Defense Mischief:

Iran poses no danger to Europe or any other continent or country, including the United States, that warrants a U.S. plan to install an anti-missile defense system in Eastern Europe. The U.S. government's justification, that this is meant to protect Europe from missiles fired by Iran, is ludicrous.

Europe is Iran's main trading partner. Iran has not attacked any of its neighbors, let alone out-of-area countries, during the past 250 years and its military capabilities are purely defensive, given the recent history of Iraq's invasion of Iran, tacitly backed by certain Western governments, during the 1980s.

The U.S. must look for another scapegoat to perpetuate its post-Cold War sway over Europe.

Fortunately, the rest of the world is keenly aware of how U.S.'s hegemonic intentions are cloaked by manufacturing threats. Instead of continuing the old power paradigm, the U.S. must shift to a post-hegemonic course of action in order to restore its global credibility.

Counselor Mohammedi may or may not be accurate in his statements regarding any perceived threat to Europe or the US. I fail to see why Iran would care about where the US places anti-missile defense systems,

Lurch,

My take is that Iran doesn't care where our anti-missile systems are located.

Their disconnect is U.S. maneuverings to identify Iran as the next Big Threat. Meanwhile, U.S. policy keeps crowding the Russians. This is not a smart idea.

Exactly my point, so why was he making these statements? If one argues newspaper column jiu-jitsu, then one might wonder why he isn't pointing out the recent Russian advances in energy control agreements, speculating that those might be the real reason for the AAMs, rather than Iran "who as the world should know, is only interested in nuclear energy for peaceful pursuits, so that we may make more of our oil available to the world market" ?

Well, Lurch, since we're playing ju-jitsu, there are many ways to break this thing down:

Either they are unwilling to cast aspersions on their Russian friends; or, they are in fact deferring attention from their own covert purposes, or...

If one operated on the principle of charity, one could say that Mohammedi was merely addressing an America which wishes to cast aspersions on his country, and did not wish to complicate the matter by deconstructing the manifold motivations behind the missile systems.
