Guess His Name

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name

Fast-forward 67 years. From the 2006 Petraeus & Amos FM 3-24 Counterinsurgency Manual,

"Long-term success in COIN depends on the people taking charge of their own affairs and consenting to the government's rule. Achieving this condition requires the government to eliminate as many causes of the insurgency as feasible. This can include eliminating those extremists whose beliefs prevent them from ever reconciling with the government."

But... but... pointing out that the Busheviks are using Nazi terminology for this kinda thing means you're some kinda extremist who thinks Bush is Hitler. Even though you didn't say that.

Remember, though, it's not what you say that counts in Soviet America. It's what the Busheviks say you said. And pointing out facts -- such as the similarity between Bushevik terminology and Nazi terminology -- is a definite no-no in Soviet America. Because in Soviet America, it is widely recognized that those pesky "fact" thingies have a liberal bias, and thus are evil and probably Communist or somethin'.

No, I was just commenting on the commenters who will soon be rolling in sputtering about using the Hitler quote anywhere near the DOD policy quote. Just watch. They'll get here. It's as if they literally have a "Bush ... Hitler" filter in their web search engines that they use for these things.

As for me, I've noticed similarities between the DOD policy quotes you highlight and lots of things. Such as, for example, Stalin's apocryphal statement "No people, no problem." They're abhorrent and un-American, at least as America was defined when I was a kid, as "the good guys". At least when I was young America tried to be the good guys. Today... not so much. Apologists for torture, genocide, whatever for the most part. Don't bother us, our favorite television program is on.

they are still, and mistakenly, thinking in terms of killing people as a means of eradicating problems. every time deadly force is used in a counter insurgency, justified, reasonable, or not, the effect is the same. the population upon whose support your mission will ultimately depend is reminded that your job there is to kill folks.

usually, they will hate you for that.

they could eradicate far more problems by doing things like fixing the electrical grid, ensuring safe water supplies and things like that. seven years without essential services makes you wonder if the people who said they would supply those things are essential.

MB,

Excellent comment, true in every counterinsurgency we've seen.

When you're a hammer, all problems look like a nail. The Army is a BFH.

Maybe, just maybe, we should change rather than them. Life isn't a Coke commercial, unfortunately. What needs eradicating differs depending on which side of the fence one resides.

Like Votaire's Candide, one should tend to one's own garden.

ghost dansing,

Terrible sad video.

"What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing, baby
It'll turn your heart black you can trust"
