Flunkies

Hey, baby, they're playin' our song,
The one we used to hear when we used to get along

--They're Playin' Our Song,

The Buckinghams

The next war... may well bury Western civilization forever

Ranger saw a local girl yesterday wearing this T-shirt, whom he said looked like she had practiced the motto with gusto. It is nice to see people who stick by their convictions.

No one is above the law, and Bush's advisers must respond to a congressional subpoena on the questionable firings of nine federal prosecutors which "scandalized the Justice Department and led to the resignation of a longtime presidential confidant, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales (
White House Aides Can Be Subpoenaed.)"

So ruled Bush-appointee U.S. District Judge John Bates, whose 93-page opinion strongly rejected the administration's attempt to extend executive privilege to aides.
It is a constitutional victory affirming Congress' power to investigate the executive branch. Democrats announced they would schedule hearings in September, following their return from Summer recess.

Bate's opinion opens with the unequivocal and simple iteration:

"Notwithstanding that the opposing litigants in this case are co-equal branches of the federal government, at bottom this lawsuit involves a basic judicial task -- subpoena enforcement -- with which federal courts are very familiar. . ."

The case marked the first time Congress ever has gone to court to demand the testimony of White House aides. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House could soon vote on a contempt citation against one of the three officials, Karl Rove, formerly Bush's top adviser.

Former White House counsel "She's my friend" Harriet Miers and former White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten will also be subpoenaed to release documents on any role the White House may have played in the prosecutor firings.

"Co-equal" is not music to the ears of Rove's constructed "unitary leader," but it honors a foundational decision made over 230 ago. Vive la Constitution.

Chief,

Mybe they'll run the clock out this time, but the next administration can take it up anew. If we are to retain any credibility, they must.

Karl Rove must be held in contempt of court, as the rest of us thinking citizens already hold him in moral contempt.

reiters,

That'd be "reuters," friend. (See the news feed in the sidebar.)

Lisa: Yep. I've said this before but it bears repeating: if this Administration is allowed to walk we will have seen the beginning of the end of our republic. It's not a question of politics (although I consider their politics loathesome) but policy. Their policy all along has been "What is it about George W. Bush that makes you want to serve him." This is as fundamentally unConstitutional as anything can be. If it isn't punished - and, as I said, I doubt it will be - every would-be demagogue, emperor and warlord will be encouraged to try their hand at befuddling the American public.

And to think. This could have been done by such giants of oratory and ego as William Jennings Bryan or Huey Long. Instead it's accomplished by this pathetic little dry drunk, this niddering nithing of a man, this craven, cozening mama's frat boy. We truly live in sadly debased times.

Chief,

Yes, it is strictly a matter of policy, regardless of one's political affiliation. If these crimes slide, the Republic is a 3-legged stool.

"it's accomplished by this pathetic little dry drunk, this niddering nothing of a man, this craven, cozening mama's frat boy. We truly live in sadly debased times" --

Your clarity and facility with the language warms my heart.
