"In return, the White House demanded that Karzai get serious about eradicating corruption and boosting a government criticized as ineffective."
Just an observation...which to be perfectly candid and honest I don't know all the details, something US gov likes to hold close to it's chest rather than being open and allow me, joe average citizen, to make up my own mind as to how effective the decision making is being executed. So, with that boiler plate caveat emptor out of the way, what we in the west consider "corruption" is often considered "doing business" in other parts of the world.
So, I would like to know...specifically, what types of Afghani "corruption" are we talking about that has offended our sensibilities?
Is it the opium trade that we want curbed?
Is it the fact that the shifiting alliances within and between the Afghani warlords are difficult to follow?
Is it the fact that for every one foot forward, we get hit with a five yard penalty?
What exactly are we talking about?
The more the Obama admin talks, the more I'm beginning to wonder...what the hell is Obama up too?
Sheer,
I must cmt on your observations re; AFGH.Let's extend them just a little and talk about CORRUPTION in the good ole USA. There's more than enuf of that to go around, I won't even try to enumerate since they are all obvious to all citizens. Aren't the bailouts a form of officially sanctioned corruption?
We are the very definition of corruption and we have the balls to criticize the other guy.Incredible.

naomi kline's "the shock doctrine" should be required reading.
the shock, whether man made or nature made, creates the perfect aftermath for these guys.
it's like the old jungle fighters who upon realizing that they do very well in a crisis, proceed to then provoke every situation they encounter into a crisis. then, they know exactly what to do, usually without messy debate or dissention.
a little spadework, i'm certain, would turn up company hands all over and in the opium pie. it's too ripe and too easy of pickings for them to ignore.
i'm waiting for "prosecution of war crimes is looking back" obama to take his turn in lecturing another nation on human rights.
